Vacuum Assisted Breast Biopsy (VABB)
Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) is a minimally invasive, stereotactic, and imagine-guided procedure in which a small tissue sample is removed from the breast for histological diagnosis of breast cancer and other breast abnormalities (benign tissue). An imaging device that is used to guide a hollow probe connected to a vacuum device. The probe is inserted through a tiny cut made in numbed skin on the breast to help diagnose. The biopsy system is partially mechanized and vacuum-assisted, that is, it uses vacuum suction to draw breast tissues into the biopsy needle.
This procedure is performed with local anesthesia on an outpatient basis, fasting and sedation are not required. This also requires cooperating guidance of mammography (stereotactic process), ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) has many benefits, including:
- High accuracy: VABB is highly accurate for diagnosing suspicious breast lesions or other abnormalities occurring around.
- Minimally invasive: VABB requires only a small incision and local anesthetic to insert the guided probe or needle for a sample collection.
- Fast recovery: Patients can usually return to normal activities within 24 hours and return home after an hour or a few hours of the procedure. This VABB does not require any long-term hospital stay or admission, it just allows the patients to return home within the operating day.
- Reduces the need for surgery: VABB can eliminate the need for surgery for benign lesions. There is no need to rely on the old-fashioned way of breast biopsies that used to cut open in order to get the suspicious breast tissues for a further diagnosis.
- Reduces the risk of repeat biopsies: VABB can reduce the need for repeat biopsies and diagnostic surgical biopsies.
- Time-saving for detection and diagnosis: VABB can reduce the time between detection and diagnosis, which can reassure patients. It gives faster and more accurate results for the collected samples.
- Reduces the cost of follow-ups: VABB can reduce the cost of repetitive follow-ups or more expensive additional examinations or extra diagnoses.
- Reduces scarring: VABB causes little or no scarring on the skin or in the breast. It leaves less-till-no blemishing scars on the skin surface.
- Can remove small abnormalities: VABB can completely remove small abnormalities, whether for aesthetic purposes or laboratory tests.
